WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, made the following statement in response to the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission’s order to revoke the registration of independent news website Rappler:
“I am concerned by the decision to silence Rappler, one of the best known independent newspapers in the Philippines. Rappler plays a major role fighting disinformation and fake news in the Philippines, and was recognized for its excellent work by the National Democratic Institute last year.
“President Duterte’s personal attacks against Rappler and the ongoing harassment of Rappler journalists raise serious questions about political motivations of the Duterte government in pursuing this action. As a fellow democracy, the Philippine government should champion journalists and newspapers that provide independent coverage and analysis, even when that coverage is critical of the government.
“I urge the Solicitor General not to press additional criminal charges, and for the SEC to reconsider their decision.”
