WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and a former Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, today made the following statement on Sunday’s presidential election in Honduras:
“I have been following the Honduran presidential election with great interest, and I am very concerned by a variety of troubling reports, including those on the lack of transparency coming from the Honduran Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) compared to prior elections. The strength of our democracies in the Americas depends in no small part on our collective commitment to electoral transparency. I urge the Honduran TSE to demonstrate its willingness to uphold the principles and values enshrined in the Inter-American Democratic Charter.”
