WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement regarding the elections in the Gambia:

“Today is a historic day in the Gambia, where hundreds of thousands of its citizens have propelled opposition candidate Adama Barrow to a decisive victory over President Yahya Jammeh.  Congratulations are in order for President-elect Barrow, as well as for President Jammeh, who has reportedly conceded and pledged to work with his successor.  I hope this peaceful, democratic process serves as a positive model for other countries across the continent.”
