WASHINGTON, DC— Representative Eliot L. Engel, the top Democrat on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today applauded House passage of legislation that would strengthen Congressional oversight of an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program. The Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015 (HR 1191) would establish a period for Congressional review of a proposed nuclear agreement and provide for a Congressional vote to approve the deal.

“Our negotiators continue to hammer out the details of an agreement with Iran that will hopefully foreclose all pathways to a nuclear weapon. And as I’ve said again and again, if a deal is struck, Congress must have a proper role in assessing that deal,” said Rep. Engel today on the House floor. “We need time to take a hard look at any deal and make sure there are no loopholes that Iran’s leaders might be able to exploit. The bill we’re debating today would give us that time.”

The bill also includes provisions that would trigger Congressional consideration of sanctions legislation in the event that Iran were not to comply with the requirements of an agreement.
