WASHINGTON, DC—Representative Eliot L. Engel, the leading Democrat on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today released the following statement regarding the terrorist attack in Tunis:

“I strongly condemn today’s terrorist attack in Tunis. My heart goes out to the families and friends of all the victims.

“No one can take away from the Tunisian people what they have already achieved. Tunisia is the birthplace of Arab democracy and has been a shining example that change is possible through inclusiveness and compromise. Building a democracy is never quick or easy, and Tunisia needs our continued support. This is especially true on days like today. This senseless terrorist attack, which left 19 dead and more than 20 others wounded, is a stark reminder that Tunisia still has enemies seeking to derail that country's progress. We cannot allow them to succeed.

“I visited Tunis a month ago and saw firsthand the future the Tunisian people are forging for themselves. I stand with them today as they mourn those lost and work to bring those responsible to justice.”
