WASHINGTON, DC—Representative Eliot L. Engel, the leading Democrat on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement about the formation of a Palestinian unity government:

“With today’s announcement of a Palestinian government that depends on Hamas’s support, the Palestinian Authority is casting serious doubt on their commitment to a two-state solution and threatening future American assistance. The United States is under no obligation to give a dime to the PA as it reconciles with a known terrorist group. The path toward a two-state solution does not go through Hamas or the United Nations; a lasting and secure peace can only be reached through a negotiated and mutually accepted agreement by the Palestinians—free from the influence of terrorists—and the Israeli government.”
