Washington, D.C. – Rep. Eliot L. Engel, the senior Democratic member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today introduced H. Res. 447, “Supporting the Democratic and European Aspirations of the People of Ukraine, and Their Right to Choose Their Own Future Free of Intimidation and Fear.” The resolution calls on Ukrainian authorities to respect the democratic rights of the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian citizens who continue to demonstrate in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities in support of a democratic, European future for their country. It further states that the United States should hold those who authorize or engage in violence against peaceful protesters personally accountable, including through targeted sanctions, if necessary, and urges all parties to exercise restraint and enter into substantive dialogue to resolve the current political and economic crisis.

The bi-partisan resolution is co-sponsored by Rep. Ed Royce, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. William Keating, Ranking Member on the House Sub-Committee on Europe, Eurasia, and Emerging Threats, and Reps. Sandy Levin, Marcy Kaptur, and Jim Gerlach, the co-Chairs of the House Ukraine Caucus. Rep. Engel also is the author of H. Res. 402, a bi-partisan resolution which was adopted unanimously by the House Foreign Affairs Committee on November 20, and which expressed support for the European aspirations of the peoples of Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, and other states in the European Union’s Eastern Partnership program.
