Washington, DC -- The signing today of the new U.S.-Russia strategic nuclear arms control agreement is an important development in international security that should set an example for other nuclear powers, said Congressman Howard Berman (D-CA), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

“Today the United States and Russia made history – and in so doing, have made the future more secure,” Berman said. “All of humanity shares an interest in living in peace, free of the threat of annihilation from nuclear weapons. Our two countries today have demonstrated a firm commitment to fulfill existing treaty obligations that will move us toward nuclear disarmament.”

Berman noted that the new agreement, which replaces the expired START I treaty and supercedes the 2002 Moscow Treaty will aid U.S. efforts to strengthen the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) at the May Review Conference in New York.

“As the United States and Russia significantly reduce their respective nuclear arsenals, we should work to ensure that other NPT signatories do their share to strengthen and enforce that vital treaty, the foundation of the world’s efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons,” Berman said. “With this work, President Obama and his team are leading the way toward a safer world.”
