WASHINGTON, DC—Representative Eliot L. Engel, the leading Democrat on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement on the situation in Burkina Faso:

“I am deeply troubled by recent developments in Burkina Faso, including efforts by President Compaore to extend his term as President, the dissolution of parliament, and violent acts by both government security forces and civilian protestors. I urge all parties to refrain from further violence and to engage in peaceful dialogue that will create a pathway to free and fair elections next year.”
