Washington, DC - Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement concerning Israel’s military operations against Iran and Iran’s retaliation:
“The consequences of further escalation of violence in the Middle East could be profound — for regional security, for global energy markets, and most urgently, for innocent civilians. The United States must continue to engage diplomatically to prevent a broader war and to pursue long-term security solutions that deter aggression and promote stability. Iran’s nuclear ambitions, sponsorship of terrorism, and destabilizing activities have long posed a serious threat to Israel’s security, regional stability, and the United States’ interests. Israel has the right to defend itself and Iran can never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.
“We would not be here today if not for President Trump and Republicans’ decision to unilaterally break the Iran nuclear agreement during his first term, but his recent pursuit of negotiations with Iran and attempts to reach a similar deal continue to be the best path forward. President Trump must work quickly to de-escalate the situation and protect American citizens — made all the more difficult by his administration’s firing of career experts at the State Department and failure to fill key ambassadorial vacancies in the region.
“I look forward to receiving comprehensive updates from the Trump administration on Israel’s unfolding military operation, the Iranian response, and U.S. efforts to protect our national interests and pursue de-escalation. The protection of American forces and diplomatic personnel throughout the region must remain a top priority, as should the safety of U.S. citizens currently in Israel and nearby countries.”
