Washington– House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA), Ranking Member Eliot Engel (D-NY), and Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations Ranking Member Karen Bass (D-CA) issued the following statement urging transparency and credibility for Ghana’s upcoming election:

“Ghana has long been recognized for peaceful elections and transfers of power between competing political parties. That's why the United States and Ghana have had strong ties based on the principle of a vibrant democracy. However, we are now concerned that increased intimidation and harassment of voters around this week’s election may damage Ghana’s celebrated legacy. With tensions rising, it is critical that the Electoral Commission ensure transparency and credibility in every phase of the electoral process. Too many African countries have veered off course with respect to democracy and governance of late. Ghana can’t follow suit.”
