WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement regarding reports of a letter from the State Department Inspector General revealing that classified material was sent to the personal email account of Secretary Powell and to the personal email accounts of Secretary Rice’s senior staff:

“The single State Department letter that’s been revealed today has given us more useful information than Congressional Republicans’ entire two-year, multi-million-dollar political sideshow aimed at derailing Secretary Clinton’s presidential campaign.  The truth couldn’t be plainer: the private-email problem is not a Hillary Clinton problem.  It’s a government-wide problem that’s existed since the advent of email itself. The manner in which sensitive information is dealt with just hasn’t kept up with advancements in technology.  And that's the problem we should be focused on.

“House Republicans should stop throwing good taxpayer money after bad and call off their partisan attack against Hillary Clinton.  Instead, let’s focus on real problems affecting real people.”
