WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement regarding the unanimous approval by the United Nations Security Council of a resolution imposing additional sanctions on North Korea:

“The Security Council's approval of additional sanctions on North Korea is an important step in counteracting the Kim regime's pursuit of nuclear-armed ballistic missiles.  These sanctions, together with the US sanctions enacted last month, reflect the international community's determination to stop North Korea's dangerous and threatening behavior in northeast Asia.  I’ve visited North Korea twice, and I understand the serious threat the regime poses—and that the people of North Korea deserve much better.  I commend the Obama Administration, in particular Ambassador Samantha Power, for the effective diplomacy that resulted in today's Security Council resolution.”
