Washington, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY), the top Democrat on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs released the following statement regarding today’s elections in Pakistan.

The statement follows:

“I am heartened by today’s elections in Pakistan, which – once a new government is formed – will result in the first peaceful transfer of power from one democratically-elected government to another in Pakistan’s history. In particular, I am impressed by the courage of the people of Pakistan, as well as those seeking to represent them, who have braved bomb blasts and other attacks in order to make their voices heard. I can only hope that the upcoming transition will be the first of many democratic transitions for Pakistan. I congratulate all of the members of Pakistan’s new National Assembly and look forward to engaging with them to advance the mutual interests of the United States and Pakistan.”
