Washington, DC -- Today, Representatives Gregory W. Meeks (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Brian Mast (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, introduced a bipartisan resolution condemning the December 14th antisemitic shooting during a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, Australia, and reaffirming the United States’ commitment to combating antisemitism and protecting religious communities worldwide.
The resolution denounces the attack, expresses condolences to the victims and their families, affirms the universal right to worship freely and safely, and calls on the Australian Government to take further action to address rising antisemitism and protect its Jewish community.
"This horrific attack targeted innocent people celebrating a sacred holiday and sent shockwaves not only through Australia’s Jewish community but through Jewish communities worldwide. The United States must stand firmly with our Australian allies against antisemitic violence wherever it occurs. Our bipartisan condemnation of this horrific attack reaffirms our commitment to safeguarding the universal right to worship safely and without fear,” Ranking Member Meeks said.
“As a Christian, I stand in solidarity with Australia’s Jewish community and the families of those who lost their lives at a time meant for celebration,” Chairman Mast said. “This heinous attack is yet another reminder of the lasting grip that the scourge of antisemitism has throughout the globe.”
