New York City -- Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, met with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly High Level Week.

The leaders discussed the path forward on supporting Ukraine and holding Russia accountable for its aggression; securing a durable and just end to this war; and the recently passed Russia sanctions and tariffs bill. The Ranking Member stressed the importance of reducing transatlantic trade barriers and increasing U.S.-European parliamentary cooperation. The leaders also discussed the impacts of the war in Iran and reaffirmed their support for a strong, unified NATO alliance and our collective defense. The discussion underscored the leaders’ shared belief that close transatlantic relations can and should endure.
