WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today made the following statement regarding the announcement that Argentina and the United Kingdom would seek closer cooperation with regard to the Falkland Islands (referred to as the Islas Malvinas by Argentina):

“I welcome the news that Argentina and the United Kingdom have revitalized their relationship, particularly through greater cooperation on the Falkland Islands. The proposed extension of flights between the Falkland Islands and Argentina, the removal of restrictions on the Falklands’ oil and gas industry and the prospect of enhanced trade are all long overdue steps in the right direction.

“In less than a year as President, Mauricio Macri has ushered in a new era for Argentine engagement with the world. The rapprochement between the United Kingdom and Argentina is just the latest example of his efforts. The United States and Argentina have also refocused on our bilateral relationship, which I hope will only continue to grow in the years ahead.”
