WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, this evening made the following statement:

“The use of chemical weapons is unacceptable, and Assad must face consequences for his barbaric actions. Yet while tonight’s strikes by the United States, the United Kingdom, and France on targets in Syria are appropriate, they also signal that this Administration’s approach to Syria hasn’t worked.

“A year ago, when our military struck targets in Syria in response to another chemical-weapons attack, I warned that such an action with no strategy to back it up would fail. Tonight’s announcement seems like history repeating, and there’s no reason to expect a different result absent a broader Syria strategy.

“The Administration must come to Congress with a clear plan to push for an end to the violence in Syria, a political transition, and a future for that country in which Assad has no role. And the President must come to Congress for authorization if he intends to continue military action.”
