Washington, DC - Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement in the lead-up to Tanzania’s elections on October 29th:
“As Tanzania prepares for national elections, I am deeply concerned by the closing civic space, enforced disappearance of government critics, persecution of political opponents, and reports of extrajudicial killings documented by human rights groups. The Tanzanian government must provide full transparency regarding arrested individuals, take immediate action to ensure that freedom of expression and peaceful association are respected, and ensure Tanzanians are able to freely participate in the democratic process. The government must also fully investigate the recent high-profile disappearances of those who have spoken out about corruption and human rights violations.
“Tanzanians want to chart a path to a brighter future, and all parties have critical roles to play in ensuring that these elections reflect the will of people.”
