Washington D.C. – Ranking Member Eliot Engel, the senior Democratic member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement on Rwanda’s actions to block United Nations sanctions against senior commanders of the M23 rebel group.

"Rwanda's actions to block UN sanctions against senior commanders of the M23 rebel group raise serious concerns about President Kagame's commitment to peace in the Great Lakes region. While Rwanda may pay lip service to the goal of ending the violence in eastern Congo, its actions suggest otherwise. Continued attempts to undermine UN and broader international efforts to defeat rebel groups and bring peace to the region may trigger a reassessment of U.S.-Rwanda ties."
