Washington D.C. – Congressman Eliot Engel, the senior Democratic Member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement in response to the U.S. decision to join the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty.

“I commend the President for his decision that the U.S. will join more than 90 other governments in signing the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty. This treaty, years in the making, is an important step in ending the illicit global trade in military weapons. In setting a new and higher standard for governments – one that the United States already meets – the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty will lead to a more peaceful and safer world.”
