Washington D.C. – Ranking Member Eliot Engel, the senior Democratic member on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement on the recent violence in Egypt.
“I roundly condemn the violence in Cairo, and believe the President’s decision to cancel military exercises with Egypt was absolutely the right move. Egypt’s leadership must halt further violence against protestors, as more bloodshed will only enflame passions on both sides. If casualties continue to mount, we need to seriously reassess our security relationship with Egypt. However, we must take into account longstanding regional security interests before doing so. Egypt is a pillar of the region, and we must be careful not to fatally undermine our relationship with its leadership.”
