Mar 23, 2022 | Press Releases

Washington, DC – Today, Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement regarding the death of Secretary Madeleine K. Albright at the age of 84:

“I am deeply saddened by Secretary Madeleine Albright’s passing. As U.N. Ambassador and as the first woman to serve as Secretary of State, she was a fierce champion for democracy, diplomacy, and human rights, and a trailblazer for women seeking a career in government. She was an immigrant with deep patriotism and pride for the United States, and the ideals for which it stands.

“Even after her career in public service, Secretary Albright continued to impart her wisdom at Georgetown University to her students, and her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.

“On a personal note, she was one of most brilliant and inspiring individuals that I’ve had the pleasure to meet and work with, and she was always willing to come to the Hill and engage with Members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Her passion for the greatness of America will be missed. My condolences to her daughters, her grandchildren, and all of her family and loved ones.”
