  3. Engel Statement on the Sanctioning of South Sudan’s First Vice President

Jan 9, 2020 | Press Releases

“I support the decision made by the Treasury Department to sanction Taban Deng Gai, First Vice President of South Sudan. First VP Taban played a major role in the serious human rights abuses and destabilizing actions that have fueled the six year-long conflict.

“Regrettably, the Trump Administration still lacks a strategy for promoting a sustainable resolution of the dispute in South Sudan. The continuing human cost of this devastating conflict is far too high for such lackluster engagement.”
