WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs; Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-IL), Co-Chair of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission; and Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organizations, introduced a resolution calling on Burundi’s political opposition to renounce violence and urging the government to comply with constitutional limits on presidential terms and re-engage in regional peace negotiations (H.Res.651).

WASHINGTON—In a response to questions Representative Eliot L. Engel, Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, submitted for Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan, the State Department expressed its belief that “those guilty of moving the bodies of Albanian civilians from Kosovo to clandestine mass graves in Serbia to conceal evidence of earlier massacres should be brought to justice.” The Department has “brought the report by the Humanitarian Law Center to the attention of Serbia’s newly appointed War Crimes Prosecutor.”

WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), the Chair Emeritus of the Committee, today praised passage in the House of Representatives of their legislation to support the Venezuelan people. The Venezuela Humanitarian Assistance and Defense of Democratic Governance Act of 2017 (H.R.2658) mandates a strategy from the U.S. Agency for International Development to provide humanitarian aid to the Venezuelan people and strengthens the current approach to Venezuela at the United Nations. The bill also aims to combat widespread corruption among government officials in Venezuela. Similar legislation was authored by Senators Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Marco Rubio (R-FL).
